“You are your own man... your playing and thinking is giving you a sound all your own.” —Jazz legend Dave Brubeck (1920-2012)
“Jess … is my true partner in crime. If not for him, and his friendship and collaboration, [our] record might not have happened. I bring ideas to him … and explain how I hear it in my head, and then, he makes it happen. …I wrote two songs, and then Jess … dove in with me to make them whole, and what a treat for me, to have [this] musical monster help me complete my vision!” —Leonisa Ardizzone, interviewed by Debbie Burke
“…pianist Jess Jurkovic treads ever so softly here as he brings the music to a close almost as if he is afraid to disturb the elders, whose ghosts inhabit the soil of the land.” —Raul Da Gama, review of Pedro Giraudo Jazz Orchestra album, Córdoba

Jess has served as a musical director for The American Tap Dance Foundation since 2006. Besides accompanying this renowned performance, education, and preservation organization, he is in charge of transcribing, notating, and arranging the music for the band supporting their dynamic performances.
He also serves as musical director for The Leonisa Ardizzone Quartet.

In 2017, Jess created The Dudley Simpson IS Doctor Who Project, where he transcribed, by ear, portions of composer Simpson’s (1922-2017) soundtracks to the long-running cult British sci-fi TV show.
Simpson’s nearly 300 episodes’ worth of work represent a wealth of unreleased music that largely does not exist separately from the finished program.
Jess’s solo piano arrangements debuted on his YouTube channel starting in 2019—over fifty piano pieces, complete with scores and analyses of their musical makeup.
His efforts have earned plaudits from actual production members of the show, past and present, and he was interviewed in Doctor Who Magazine Issue 574, February 2022.
In February 2023, Jess wrote and performed a 45-minute presentation on Simpson’s “Doctor Theme.” This was debuted at the famous Gallifrey One convention in Los Angeles. He will perform it again at the L.I. Who (Long Island, NY) convention in August 2024.
A second season of the Project has just finished! Links to both YouTube playlists are found below.

Jess wrote the liner notes for two of his first three CD releases, Blue and Violet, and Two Hands, Volume 1.
His work on transcribing Doctor Who music has also provided opportunities to write. Besides scripting every one of his videos, Jess has written for Vworp Vworp!, the renowned Who fanzine. Issue Six (November 2023) celebrated the program’s 60th anniversary, and Jess contributed a two-page article about composer Norman Kay’s music for the very first Doctor Who story in 1963.

Jess’s study of Doctor Who music has made him in-demand as a podcast guest, whether discussing The Project, or the series—past and present.
Jess has appeared on several popular podcasts, such as The Metebelis 2, Radio Free Skaro, Toby Hadoke’s Happy Times and Places, Something Who, and Gallifrey Public Radio.
